Draw-System Elk Hunting

Larry Woodward ElkHow the Draw Works

New Mexico operates a quota-draw system. The quota-draw system gives every applicant an equal chance to receive a tag each year, regardless of what happened the year before. It's great for first time applicants. A bonus-point system would be a logical improvement for the future.

Application Info

The deadline for submitting applications for the draw hunts is April 9 and the actual draw is in late June. Elite takes care of all the application work for you. Up to 4 hunters can apply on the same application so either everyone or no one draws. You do not need to send in your license fee up front. If you provide a credit card number, the Game & Fish will charge you $8 to apply and only bill you for the license fee if you are successful in the draw.

In the Sacramento Mountains, there are 2 archery hunts, 2 muzzleloader hunts and 3 rifle hunts available to you as draw choices. You can ultimately select 3 choices on your application. For example, you can select a rifle hunt as your first choice, a muzzleloader hunt as your second choice and an archery hunt as your third choice. The computer will go down your list and assign the first available tags based on your order of preference. If no tags are available for any of the three Koch Elkhunts at the time your application is drawn, you are then unsuccessful in the draw. Elite will confer with you prior to submitting your application and help you decide what hunts you should apply for. It is not a difficult process.

Licensing Fee

Elite requires a $500 deposit to apply each hunter for the draw elk hunts. If you are unsuccessful in the draw and leave your $500 deposit with Elite, you will lock-in the hunt price at the time of booking, until you draw and Elite will waive a licensing fee. If you don't draw and wish to have your deposit refunded, Elite will charge you a one-time licensing fee of $50 and refund the remaining $450 of your deposit. Should you choose to reapply with Elite in the future, you will never be charged any additional licensing fees even if you choose to have your deposit refunded each year you are unsuccessful in the draw.
